I'm going to talk about disturbing things in childrens' cartoons. Because these things matter.
The primary reason I bring this up is because I find myself deeply perturbed by a character in "The Misadventures of Flapjack." The show itself is cute, but dark, and at times a little too weird for me. That is saying something, since I am a liberal artist who has a high tolerance and appreciation for misguided/misunderstood artistic genius. There is a character named Peppermint Larry, and he owns and operates "The Candy Barrel," a candy store. Larry's cool, but in the show he sometimes makes obscure references to 'Candy Wife' (shown below).
She is (to our knowledge) an inanimate mannequin constructed from candy. However, Larry addresses her as if she is a living being. Perhaps it is this ambiguity that makes her so eerie. It could also be the fact that she looks like a vacant candy-zombie and she has candy corn for enamel nails. Something about her makes me shudder a bit inside.
